Message from the APPROACH-IS II team from the University Hospital Rigshospitalet Copenhagen, Denmark (Birgitte Lykkeberg and Miriam Biyai)
December 7th 2020
Since we first heard about APPROACH-IS-II the world has turned upside down. Covid 19 has indeed affected everyone's lives and many have lost a friend or family member. The prospects for 2021 are a bit positive with the upcoming vaccines.
University hospital Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark is one of collaborators in APPROACH-IS II. We started data collection in February this year. Despite of the pandemic Covid 19 and a lock down in the spring, we have learned that patients with CHD are very willing to participate in APPROACH-IS-II. We have so far included 192 patients for part I and II.
In our center we consider APPROACH-IS II as a unique opportunity to participate in international research. Even though we have results from many years of research and the care for patients with CHD has significantly improved, we still have gaps in our knowledge. International research enables researchers to access additional, often specific, expertise, gain new perspectives on research and build relationships with others in the field.
Besides that, we know that the population of patients with CHD is growing and getting older. Therefore, it will be interesting to see the upcoming data from frailty phenotype and epidemiological characteristics of aging adults with CHD. This will inform healthcare professionals who will be designing the care in the future.
Our center has proposed a piggyback study investigating the prevalence of fetal complications in women with congenital heart disease. We are grateful that 10 collaborating centers participate in this study.
Best wishes
Miriam Bianca Besser Biyai and Birgitte Lykkeberg
